SMARTS Surrealism: Dreams & Nightmares, Grades 4-12

SMARTS Surrealism: Dreams & Nightmares, Grades 4-12

Surrealism is an art form that plays with the line between the real and imaginary, the conscious and the unconscious mind. Works in this style appear dreamlike, uncanny, irrational, unconventional, and sometimes random. They rely on symbolism, metaphors and emotion to translate meaning. This style was originally created out of a need to clear the unconscious mind and create a space for it to express itself. This category of art was popularized by artist such as Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and Pablo Picasso. Beauty can be created out of the strange, absurd, and quirky side of life. Surrealism opens the creative space to draw from your dreams, nightmares, random thoughts, or imagination. Only rules here are vivid colors, creative ideas, and an imaginative heart. We will use alcohol inks, colored pencils, graphite, ink, and 3D materials to build our works.
