Visual Arts

SMARTS Robots, Aliens, and Monsters - Oh My! (Team Challenge)

Grades K-3
Instructor: Mia Mondora

Get ready for an exciting team challenge where you and your friends will work together to create your own robots, aliens, monsters, and more using recycled materials!

In this class, your team will:

Problem-solve together as you figure out how to build your creatures using boxes, tissue paper, buttons, and other fun supplies.
Practice teamwork by sharing ideas and helping each other build your creations.
Build fine motor skills as you cut, glue, and decorate your characters.
Use creativity to design unique space creatures and even decorate a whole alien world!

Each team will get a set of materials like toilet paper tubes, odd containers, and fun decorations. It’s your job to work together and create the most exciting creatures for your team’s space. Will your team make the funniest robot or the wildest monster? The challenge is on! Join us for this hands-on team adventure where every idea counts, and collaboration is the key to creating something amazing!

SMARTS Stop Motion Animation

Grades 4-8

If films like Kubo and the Two Strings, Corpse Bride, Coraline, or Wendell & Wild captured your imagination, then you’re probably fascinated by the magic of stop-motion animation. This unique art form involves manipulating characters or objects frame by frame, creating the illusion of movement when played back. While it takes years of dedication to produce a full-length movie this way, you don’t need that much time to dive into the world of stop-motion! In this class, we’ll explore the basics of stop-motion animation and experiment with bringing our own ideas to life, one frame at a time. You’ll learn how to create short animated films, experiment with characters, props, and backgrounds, and gain hands-on experience with the techniques used in professional stop-motion productions. Whether you're interested in storytelling, animation, or just want to try something new, this class will give you the tools and skills to create your very own stop-motion masterpiece!

SMARTS Video Editing

Grades 4-8

The editing process is a crucial yet challenging part of the creative world, and nearly every professional, regardless of their field, will need to rely on it. Whether in film, animation, or digital media, editing ensures that the final product reflects the best possible outcome. In the movie industry, outtakes or bloopers are the scenes that don’t quite make the cut. In animation, these are similarly known as “outtakes.” Regardless of the term, the editing process involves reviewing and revising the content to achieve a polished and coherent story. In this class, we’ll dive into the art and techniques of video editing, learning how to decide which footage to keep, remove, or refine. We’ll explore the creative aspects of adding transitions, sound effects, and special effects that enhance the viewer’s experience, while maintaining the vision of the project. You’ll gain hands-on experience analyzing individual frames and scenes, making decisions on how to best communicate the story and message to an audience. Editing is not just a technical skill, but an art form that brings the creator's vision to life—join us to discover the magic behind the process!

SMARTS Me, Myself, and I

Grades 6-12

This visual art class is all about discovering yourself through the powerful medium of self-portraits. Together, we will explore your interests, personality, and experiences through various artistic techniques. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with different mediums and styles, from drawing and painting to mixed media, as you work toward creating your final painted masterpiece. We will study the works of iconic artists like Rembrandt, Da Vinci, and Frida Kahlo, who have used self-portraits to express their identities and communicate their stories to the world. Self-portraits are a unique way to challenge your artistic skills and give voice to your inner world. So, what do you want to say with your art? What’s the best way to express it? SMARTS A Taste of Graphic Design

Graphic design is a fascinating and multifaceted art form that merges fine art, computer skills, typography, and the core principles of design to create impactful visuals. These visuals have the power to simplify complex ideas or bring engaging aesthetics to digital spaces, making graphic design an essential part of modern communication. Its potential is limitless, yet its presence is so ubiquitous that we often don’t even notice it—graphic design is everywhere, from advertisements and video games to websites and logos. In this class, you’ll explore the world of graphic design and practice by creating your own logo and t-shirt designs. You’ll learn how to craft graphics that communicate a message, capture attention, and add meaning to digital and print media. Whether you’re interested in animation, marketing, design, or media/communication, understanding graphic design is a key skill that opens doors to a wide range of creative careers. By the end of the course, you’ll have real-world context for your artwork, learning how your unique creativity can be applied in countless ways across various industries. Early SMARTS Robots, Aliens, and Monsters - Oh My!

Get ready for an out-of-this-world adventure where creativity knows no limits! Early SMARTS Funkified Fairytales, Fables, and More

Ages 18 months - 5yrs + 1 Adult

This is a lively and interactive class where classic stories are given a fun, musical twist! Preschool students will explore beloved fairytales, fables, and other timeless stories, but with a funky, energetic spin. Through rhythm, catchy songs, and lively tunes, children will bring these age-old tales to life in a whole new way. Each story will be paired with music that adds rhythm and fun to the narrative—think funky beats and toe-tapping melodies that encourage movement, singing, and dancing! Students will get to actively participate by playing simple instruments, joining in on call-and-response songs, or even acting out scenes with a musical flair. This class fosters creativity, imagination, and a love for storytelling while introducing young children to the joy of music. Whether it's dancing with the Three Little Pigs or singing along with Little Red Riding Hood, "Funkified Fairytales, Fables, and More" is a musical adventure that makes learning stories even more exciting!

Early SMARTS Animal Jam

Age 18 months - 5yrs + 1 Adult

This is a playful class for preschool students that introduces music through fun games and animal exploration! In this interactive experience, children will discover the world of sound and rhythm by mimicking animal movements and sounds, all while engaging in music-based games. Students will explore different animals and their unique rhythms—whether it's stomping like an elephant, fluttering like a butterfly, or hopping like a frog—using their bodies and simple instruments. Through songs, movement, and rhythm-based activities, kids will develop an understanding of musical concepts like beat, tempo, and coordination. This class encourages creativity, motor skills, and a love for music as children move, play, and explore with the exciting world of animals!

SMARTS Children's Choir

Do you love to sing? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to sing in a group and make beautiful music together? No matter the tone or depth of your voice it is special—and even more powerful when combined with others! In this class, we’ll explore the basics of vocal technique, including how to improve pitch, harmonize, and blend our voices to create a full, rich sound. You’ll learn how to sing as part of a choir, developing both your individual skills and your ability to work with others to make beautiful music. This class is perfect for anyone who enjoys singing, whether you sing in school, church, or just in the shower! SMARTS Steel Band

Grades 4-12
Instructor: Daniel Shiller

Originating in Trinidad and Tobago, the steelpan was born from musicians playing instruments such as bamboo, biscuit tins, dustbins, and oil drums. While beating the oil drum, the musicians began to cause dents in the metal. Finding the dents, they created had different pitches, they started to dent the oil drums on purpose, and these dents allowed them to play melodies. The steelpan, or steel drum, is handmade by a tuner, who hammers the steel into shape. Steelpans are not standardized and are created in different sizes such as bass pans, rhythm pans, and lead pans. These different sizes make up the steel band, giving it a range similar to an orchestra. Steel bands are made up of steelpans, playing everything from Calypso, Reggae, Motown, and even Classical music. Steel bands also consist of a percussion section called an engine room, which keeps the band moving by providing a rhythmic backbone. The engine room consists of drum set, congas, shakers, scratchers, cowbells, and the iron. This class will further explore more advanced steelpan and percussion techniques. Students can expect to gain experience on a variety of both pitched and non-pitched percussion. Students should already have a basic understanding of music and rhythm reading before enrolling in the course.

SMARTS Guitar Lesson/Studio (1A & 1B)

Grades 5-12
Instructor: Simon Kenneally

With guitar, you can learn to play all the songs you love and even write your own music! In this class, you will learn how to tune and hold your guitar, strum basic rhythm patterns, and learn beginner chord progressions that will get you playing songs quickly. We have everything from finger training exercises to play-along videos to help you build confidence as you learn at your own pace. When you meet with your SMARTS Teacher, learning goals will be personalized to your interests and how you are progressing on the instrument. SMARTS has a limited number of guitars available for students who do not own a guitar. There will be SMARTS Guitar Practice Cards issued and each student must practice a minimum of 4 days a week, 20 minutes each day.

All music students in lessons are scheduled and placed manually by SMARTS staff according to ability level and availability. Enrollment prioritizes students currently taking lessons at SMARTS, then students on the waitlist, and finally new students.

SMARTS Advanced Guitar

Grades 5-12

The guitar is one of the most popular instruments in the world. The iconic guitar sound can be heard in most music genres including rock, jazz, funk, soul, metal, pop, bluegrass, country, and many more. This class will build on the basics taught in Guitar 1A & 1B, to help you build the skills to play unique riffs and more challenging songs. We will work through music theory, advanced chord progressions, inversions, compound and irregular time signatures, scale patterns, and improvisation. The learning goals will be personalized to the needs of the class and the individual students. SMARTS has a limited number of guitars available for students who do not own a guitar. SMARTS Rock Band

Grades 4-12

Want to be a rock star but not too keen on starting a band in your parent’s garage? Join this gig! We’re looking for guitarists, drummers, singers, bassists, keyboardists – you name it. In this class the students will be working together to write original songs. Throughout the process, students will get a hands-on experience of being "in the band” from the initial stages of collaborating with each other to complete their own songs, to rehearsing together and finally recording their songs! Students of this class will get a fuller appreciation of music creation, teamwork and what it takes to actually record a hit song and perform a live show as a real band! The SMARTS Rock Band will showcase their original song(s) at the SMARTS Family Dinner. Students must be proficient with their instrument and comfortable reading rhythms and notes to enroll.

SMARTS Ukulele 101

Grades 3-6
Instructor: Alex Miller

This fun Hawaiian instrument has captivated audiences with imaginations of island life for years, but it’s not only an instrument you hear on vacation. The ukulele appears in many recent top radio hits, such as Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” and Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” The simplicity of the ukulele makes it a great first step for anyone interested in learning guitar! In this beginner’s class, students will learn harmony and melody relationships, as well as rhythmic structures and coordination. The class will focus on basic chords and rhythm patterns that can be utilized solo or in conjunction with the group. No previous experience is required to attend this class.

SMARTS Music Lab Series

Grades 5-12
Instructor: Simon Kenneally

Find the right key to unlock & grow your inner musician. SMARTS Music Lab is designed for advanced students who are already comfortable with an instrument (or more) and are eager to take their musicality to the next level. This program is centered around helping young musicians discover their unique style, improve their musicality, and guide them through the process of becoming a professional musician. The course will empower students to experiment with different genres, develop a deep understanding of music production, and gain the skills necessary to present themselves professionally in the music industry. SMARTS students are expected to maintain an attendance rate of at least 80%. This class will meet twice a week for 2-hour sessions each day.

SMARTS Students must register for each semester in order to complete the full series. This semester’s focus is Blues and Jazz. You are signing up to attend on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Piano Lessons

SMARTS Student Piano Lessons provide you with a premier piano experience like nothing you’ve experienced before! Being part of a piano lab is a unique community experience where students collaborate to learn to play music, accompany each other, and compose songs together. SMARTS teachers are professionals in their field and come to us with years of experience and expertise creating hands-on music lessons that cover piano skills such as music theory, rhythm, chords, treble and bass clef, scales, notation, improv, composition, and so much more. Our curriculum is designed to instill a core understanding and provide a comprehensive learning experience for every SMARTS student. In Virtual SMARTS classes, students have the privilege of learning piano via two camera angles so that students can see their teacher’s hands on the piano keys and follow along. At our Ohio One Facility, our Yamaha digital piano lab is the only one of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, where students learn piano using high tech, state of the art equipment with headsets, piano programs, and a SMART TV broadcasting the teacher’s keyboard and hands. Our versatility, facility, equipment, and teachers make this a program you can’t find anywhere else in the Mahoning Valley!

Students in grades K-2 may take SMARTS Adventures in Piano, which prepares students for group learning in our digital piano lab. Students in grades 3-12 may take group lessons in our SMARTS Piano Lab classes. All students in piano are scheduled and placed manually by SMARTS staff according to ability level and availability. Enrollment prioritizes students currently taking piano at SMARTS, then students on the waitlist, and finally new students.

Requirements: All SMARTS Piano Lessons are free, but attendance, hard work, practice and dedication are required from all of our students. Because SMARTS Piano Lab is consistently waitlisted, it is imperative that students keep their commitment to their piano class and abide by the attendance policy. Each student must practice a minimum of 4 days a week, 20 minutes each day between weekly lessons and report this time on our electronic SMARTS Piano Practice Card. Remember, students will learn more with more practice. All SMARTS Piano classes are full-year classes. SMARTS has a limited number of keyboards available to be signed out to students who do not have pianos.

SMARTS Piano 2A and Beyond

This is the third-leveled piano class offered by SMARTS for grades 4-12. This class covers more advanced piano techniques and skills. Students will be placed in this course based on completion of Piano 1A and 1B. Students that have prior experience may opt to take a skills assessment with a SMARTS Instructor by appointment to place into this class. This class will have a strong focus on applying music theory to music-making and song creation. Additionally, we will work through playing more challenging pieces while experimenting with emotion and style. Students in this class will develop an advanced understanding of simple and compound time signatures, intervallic relationships, chords, and syncopated rhythms.

Strings Program

SMARTS Strings Program gives students the opportunity to investigate the world of strings in an exciting and informative group lesson format. Students work in small groups of up to four students with the instructor. In a weekly session, students will learn to identify musical terms, music theory, musical styles, history, maintenance, and the basics of musical performance. Personalized and tailored instruction is designed to utilize each student’s current abilities and then build skills upon that foundation.

All music students in lessons are scheduled and placed manually by SMARTS staff according to ability level and availability. Enrollment prioritizes students currently taking lessons at SMARTS, then students on the waitlist, and finally new students.

Requirements: All SMARTS Strings classes are free to you, but attendance, hard work, practice and dedication are required from all of our students. SMARTS Strings classes are consistently waitlisted so it is important that students keep their commitment to the class and abide by the attendance expectations in the Student Admissions Policy. There will be SMARTS Violin/Cello Practice Cards issued and each student must practice a minimum of 4 days a week, 20 minutes each day. Remember, students will learn more with more practice. SMARTS strings classes are full-year classes. SMARTS has a limited number of violins/cellos available to be signed out to students who do not have instruments.

SMARTS String Program: Violin 1

Grades 3-12

This is the first violin class offered in the SMARTS String Program for students who are either just starting violin or students who are still in Suzuki book 1. Students will build a foundation that includes identifying the parts of the violin, proper violin posture, form for holding the bow, and basic bowing and finger-plucking techniques on open strings. Students will learn how to listen and play with a group in unison. Learning violin takes patience, concentration, and attention to detail, but it is a lovely and rewarding instrument to play. Students will play exercises and warm ups that will prepare them to play through Suzuki book 1 by the end of this class.

Students will be required to journal their practice time on a practice card. Practice requirements for this course: Minimum of 4 days a week, 20 minutes each day.

Class will be structured within a 2-hour time frame that will consist of one 1-hour group lesson, and one 45-minute ensemble class. Students will be expected to attend both portions of this class weekly.

SMARTS String Program: Cello 1

Grades 4-12

This is the first cello class offered in the SMARTS String Program for students who are either just starting cello or students who are still in Suzuki book 1. SMARTS Exploring Contemporary Dance

Grades 4-12

Contemporary dance, which emerged in the mid-20th century, challenges the rigid structures of classical ballet and modern dance. It is a versatile and dynamic style that incorporates elements from a variety of dance genres, including ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop, offering endless opportunities for creative expression. Through this class, students will not only learn foundational techniques but also engage in the exploration of diverse music genres. By experimenting with different movement styles, they will develop their unique artistic voice while gaining confidence in improvisation, collaboration, and emotional expression. This class encourages students to push the boundaries of traditional dance, promoting a deeper understanding of movement and its connection to music, culture, and personal creativity.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the importance of slowing down and taking time to relax. Our minds are often racing, jumping from one task to the next, leaving little room for calm. Yoga offers a powerful way to reconnect and find balance between the body and mind. This class introduces students to a variety of yoga poses, breathing techniques, and meditation practices, all designed to promote relaxation, mindfulness, and physical well-being. Through regular practice, students will develop the tools needed to manage stress, improve focus, and cultivate a sense of inner peace. Our goal is to help students establish lasting habits that support their mental and emotional health, both in and out of the classroom.

Breaking News: Hurricane Wolf is causing big problems in Little Pig Village! Straw houses are in danger! But don’t worry—our brave reporters are on the scene, bringing you all the latest updates from the fairytale kingdom! In Funny Fables Newsroom, students will become reporters, news anchors, and even characters from their favorite fairy tales! They’ll have a blast creating silly news stories about wacky events in the fairytale world. Students will learn how to plan fun stories, write funny headlines, and perform as quirky characters like the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, and more!

Along the way, they’ll practice important skills like speaking confidently, telling stories, and working together as a team. By the end of the class, everyone will be part of a fairytale news broadcast, full of laughter and creativity. Come join us for the most fun, magical news show the kingdom has ever seen!

SMARTS Funny Fables Newsroom: Reporting Live from the Fairytale Kingdom (Grades 4-6)

This just in: Hurricane Wolf is wreaking havoc on Little Pig Village, causing a straw house crisis! Sources describe the storm as “huffing,” “puffing,” and blowing everything in its path down. In Funny Fables Newsroom, students will step into the shoes of reporters, anchors, and locals to create their own whimsical, comedic news program. The class will teach students how to write hilarious and engaging copy, perfect for fairytale-themed news stories. They'll practice delivering lines to the camera with flair, improvising fun interviews, and playing quirky characters straight from the pages of their favorite fables. Throughout the class, students will learn about the essentials of news reporting, from researching story ideas to crafting punchy headlines and delivering them with personality. They’ll also dive into the world of character creation, as they play the whimsical locals being interviewed, like the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, or even a mysterious, shape-shifting dragon!

By the end of the course, each student will have contributed to a fairytale news broadcast, practicing key skills in writing, performance, and teamwork, all while laughing through the process.
