Student Assistants

Meet our dedicated team of student assistants who work to make SMARTS great.

Rasa Ahmadi

Rasadokht “Rasa” Ahmadi is a pianist, sound engineer, and music educator originally from Tehran, Iran. Fascinated by music from childhood, she began piano lessons at eight and entered the Tehran Music School at twelve, knowing she wanted to pursue a life in music. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Music Performance and completed Orff Schulwerk certification in children’s music education. After moving to the United States in 2023, she discovered a new passion for Electronic Music while expanding her studies into Audio and Music Production at Youngstown State University. At SMARTS, she teaches Adventures in Piano, Music and Movement, and Early SMARTS Music, as well as contributing to curriculum development.

Rasa’s artistry bridges traditions and technologies: her classical piano training and Persian Santoor performance meet her skills in sound engineering, digital audio production, and a growing versatility with instruments like guitar and ukulele. She brings this broad musical background into her teaching and is especially passionate about the emotion’s children experience as they discover music. Outside the classroom, she is an avid adventurer and yogi, committed to helping young people grow not only through music but also through a thoughtful, connected relationship with the world around them.

Mike Gibbins

Michael Gibbins is a Business Administration student at YSU. With eight years of experience as a SMARTS student in Rock Band, Michael has a strong background in music and is an accomplished guitar player. Beyond music and academics, Michael enjoys reading and playing chess, both of which sharpen critical thinking and creativity. With a passion for learning and self-improvement, Michael strives to connect disciplines and share knowledge with others, helping them achieve success in their own ways.

Nate G

Nathan Gostley is a Geology and GIS student at Youngstown State University with a strong interest in geoscience, art, and lapidary design. With a background in drawing, painting, and lapidary, he brings a creative perspective to his scientific pursuits, often transforming rocks collected in the field into unique artistic works. Nate views geology not only as a science of understanding Earth's processes but also as a canvas for creativity, where natural forms and human craftsmanship overlap. He believes that art and science are not separate disciplines but are complementary ways of exploring and understanding the world, and he strives to embody that connection in his studies and his work.

Javin Shaffer

Javin Shafer is a student assistant at SMARTS. Javin is currently a Bass Music Education Major at Youngstown State University. Javin hopes to use his degree upon graduation to become a band director. In his free time, Javin plays bass guitar, guitar, marching and concert percussion. Javin is also a part of the YSU marching band and travels with the YSU football team to play during halftime!
